Hans Bergström wall lamps
The rare wall lamps, model 1070, designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden, are a distinctive example of mid-century Scandinavian lighting. Created by one of Sweden’s foremost lighting designers, these lamps encapsulate the elegance, craftsmanship, and restrained decorative sensibility that characterize Hans Bergström’s work and the design ethos of Ateljé Lyktan during the 1950s.
Each lamp is constructed from patinated copper, with a rich surface coloration dominated by deep brown tones interspersed with natural greenish hues resulting from oxidation over time. This patina not only reinforces the lamps’ age and authenticity but also contributes to their visual depth and warmth, particularly when illuminated.
The lamps feature a cylindrical body with a lower perimeter adorned by a precise and uniform pattern of perforations. This functional embellishment diffuses light in a soft, ambient manner and generates subtle, patterned shadow effects on surrounding surfaces. The perforated edge, a recurring motif in Bergström’s lighting designs, serves both a decorative and atmospheric purpose. The body is affixed to the wall by a discreet bracket, maintaining the clean and minimalist silhouette.
The overall design reflects the modernist values of the time—emphasizing material honesty, functionality, and elegance through simplification. Hans Bergström (1910–1996), founder of Ateljé Lyktan, was a leading figure in Swedish lighting, recognized for his ability to marry modern aesthetics with technical innovation and humanistic warmth. His designs often employed perforated metal, textured materials, and precise geometric forms, all present in model 1070.
Produced by Ateljé Lyktan, a firm known for its high standards in lighting production and its long-standing commitment to designer-led work, these lamps demonstrate the company’s strength in combining artisanal quality with architectural integration.
The lamps are in very good vintage condition, exhibiting a beautifully aged patina and minor signs of wear consistent with age and careful use. Structurally sound and visually intact, they retain both their functional and aesthetic integrity.
Each lamp measures 14.5 cm in width, 27.5 cm in height, and 20 cm in depth. In imperial units, this corresponds to approximately 5.7 inches wide, 10.8 inches high, and 7.9 inches deep.
