Hans Bergström wall lamps
This rare pair of wall lamps is a variant of model 1040, designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden during the 1940s. The lamps are executed in patinated copper, giving them a deep green and brown surface character that has developed naturally over time. The cylindrical shades are perforated with a repeating vertical slot pattern that creates a distinctive light effect when illuminated, casting patterned shadows on the wall and providing both functional and atmospheric lighting.
The design reflects Hans Bergström’s characteristic approach to lighting, where simple geometric forms are enhanced through subtle detailing and material choice. The cylindrical shades are supported by short, straight arms that project from circular wall mounts, resulting in a minimalistic and balanced composition. The copper has acquired a rich patina, highlighting its age and authenticity, while the clean, restrained geometry keeps the design timeless.
Hans Bergström was one of Sweden’s most important lighting designers of the mid-20th century and co-founder of Ateljé Lyktan, a company known for its high-quality, hand-crafted lighting fixtures. This model is representative of Bergström’s early post-war work, where he combined modernist ideals with artisanal craftsmanship, producing lighting that was both technically refined and aesthetically sophisticated.
The pair is in excellent vintage condition, with surface patina and signs of age that contribute to their character. The perforated pattern remains crisp, and the structural integrity of the lamps is preserved. These lamps are suitable for both functional and decorative purposes, offering warm, diffuse light and a striking wall presence.
