Information

This rare and early pair of easy chairs, model CH-28, was designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1951 and produced by Carl Hansen & Søn in Denmark. The chairs feature a frame constructed in solid oak, with visible and well-articulated joinery that underscores Wegner’s commitment to structural clarity and exceptional craftsmanship. The chairs are distinguished by their floating seat and sculpturally curved backrest, both upholstered in natural leather that has developed a patina over time. The armrests are sharply defined and organically shaped, extending outward in a wing-like formation that supports the sitter’s arms at a natural reclining angle, further enhancing the ergonomic comfort of the piece.

The design of the chairs emphasizes openness and balance. The rear legs angle sharply backward, blending seamlessly into the support for the backrest, while the front legs taper slightly. This architectural geometry adds visual dynamism while also contributing to a more comfortable seating posture. The sculptural quality of the design marks one of Wegner’s early experiments in combining fine art with functional objects, blurring the boundary between the two.

Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) is regarded as one of the most influential figures in modern chair design. A key member of the Danish modern movement, Wegner trained as a cabinetmaker and later studied at the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts. His design philosophy combined traditional craftsmanship with industrial techniques and organic minimalism. The CH-28 model is particularly significant as it represents a transition in Wegner’s work from purely functional seating to more expressive, sculptural forms.

Carl Hansen & Søn, the company responsible for producing these chairs, has been a central figure in Danish furniture manufacturing since the early 20th century. Known for its collaboration with Wegner, which began in 1949, the company has built a reputation for precision joinery, high-quality hardwoods, and a deep commitment to traditional Danish woodworking techniques. The CH-28 exemplifies their dedication to craftsmanship and timeless design.

The leather upholstery has developed a natural patina, with tonal variations, minor creasing, and surface wear that reflect its age and use, enhancing the authenticity of the piece. The oak frames remain in structurally sound condition, with a warm honeyed finish that complements the rich tones of the leather.

Each chair measures 73 cm in width, 66 cm in depth, and 77 cm in height, with a seat height of 38 cm. In imperial units, these dimensions correspond to approximately 28.7 inches wide, 26 inches deep, and 30.3 inches high, with a seat height of 15 inches. The chairs are in excellent structural condition, with the leather upholstery showing character that adds to their appeal as authentic mid-century design pieces.
