Harald Notini ceiling lamp
This rare height-adjustable ceiling lamp, model 11895, was designed by Harald Notini and produced by Böhlmarks in Sweden during the 1940s. It is a striking example of Swedish mid-century lighting, merging early modernist functionality with neoclassical detailing rendered in finely crafted brass.
The lamp features a central vertical structure supported by three textile-covered cords housed within a telescopic brass sleeve. This design allows the fixture’s height to be adjusted from 115 cm to 195 cm, a technical innovation uncommon for its time that enhances versatility and practical use across different interior settings.
At the base of the central rod, three hemispherical brass shades are arranged radially. Each shade is smooth and highly polished, distinguished by a decorative edge featuring stepped, perforated scallops. These perforations contribute both to the lamp’s aesthetic appeal and its light diffusion, casting a subtle dotted pattern on surrounding surfaces when illuminated. The central hub is fluted and topped by three ornamental loops, seamlessly blending classical motifs with the fixture’s functional modernist framework.
The lamp is in very good condition, displaying a consistent natural brass patina and minor wear consistent with its age. The brass remains untreated, exhibiting a warm, time-earned character. The underside of the counterweight bears the model number “11895” along with Böhlmarks’ maker’s mark, confirming provenance and authenticity.
Harald Notini (1879–1959) was a prominent Swedish designer known for his expertise in metalwork and his ability to integrate traditional forms with modernist principles. His collaborations with Böhlmarks produced elegant lighting fixtures that balance classical ornamentation and contemporary functionality.
Böhlmarks, established in 1872, was a leading Swedish lighting manufacturer active from the 1920s through the 1960s. The company specialized in high-quality brass and glass fixtures and collaborated with several notable designers, playing a key role in shaping Sweden’s decorative and functional lighting traditions.
Stylistically, this ceiling lamp reflects early Scandinavian modernism infused with elements of Art Deco and Swedish Grace. Its symmetrical geometry, refined detailing, and emphasis on material quality position it as a rare and collectible example of mid-century Swedish design.
The lamp measures 60 cm in diameter and adjusts in height from 115 cm to 195 cm (approximately 23.62 x 45.28–76.77 inches).
