Harald Notini ceiling lamp
This rare ceiling lamp, model no. 6461, designed by Harald Notini and produced by Böhlmarks in Sweden, is a distinguished example of early 20th-century Scandinavian lighting design. It reflects the stylistic influences of the Swedish Grace and Art Deco movements, combining refined ornamentation with functional clarity—hallmarks of Notini’s approach to lighting during his tenure with Böhlmarks.
The centerpiece of the lamp is its flared, amber-colored glass shade, which features intricate cut and engraved decoration. The surface has undergone acid treatment to create a matte finish, softening the transparency of the glass and enhancing its ability to diffuse light evenly. The ribbed, radiating pattern carved into the glass provides a dynamic sense of movement and texture, drawing the eye outward from the center while refracting the light in subtle, atmospheric patterns.
Supporting the shade is a structure of bronze-patinated brass. The patination lends a rich, aged tone to the metal, complementing the warmth of the amber glass. The upper section of the lamp features ornate, curved brass arms and scrollwork, introducing an elegant, organic quality that contrasts with the geometric regularity of the glass. These decorative elements are finely executed, underscoring the high level of craftsmanship characteristic of Böhlmarks’ production during this period.
A small brass tassel detail, suspended from the base of the ceiling mount, completes the composition with a subtle gesture of formality and historicist reference—an echo of neoclassical and decorative traditions reinterpreted through the lens of modernist refinement.
The condition of the lamp is good vintage. The brass components display a natural patina, with minor surface wear consistent with age. The glass is intact, with only slight signs of age-related wear, such as faint marks or subtle clouding, that do not detract from its overall clarity or decorative effect.
Measuring 50 cm in diameter and 75 cm in height (19.7 x 29.5 inches), the lamp is well-suited for formal interiors, including entryways, dining areas, or high-ceilinged salons, where its sculptural qualities and warm illumination can be appreciated.
Harald Notini (1887–1969) was one of Sweden’s foremost lighting designers, and his collaboration with Böhlmarks resulted in some of the most refined and technically accomplished lighting fixtures of the era. Model no. 6461 is a rare and highly collectable example of his work—demonstrating a synthesis of material richness, balanced proportion, and ornamental restraint that characterizes the best of Swedish decorative arts from the interwar and postwar periods.
