Information

This is a very rare cabinet designed by Danish architect and designer Ib Kofod-Larsen and produced by Seffle Möbelfabrik in Sweden during the 1960s. The cabinet exemplifies Kofod-Larsen’s refined approach to material expression, structural elegance, and Scandinavian functionalism, elevated by meticulous attention to detail and luxurious wood selection.

The cabinet is executed in richly figured rosewood, showcasing intense natural grain patterns that run horizontally across the front façade in uninterrupted symmetry. The coloration ranges from deep chestnut to reddish and nearly black streaks, forming mirrored flame-like patterns across the double-door panels. The upper section features sliding glass doors that reveal a display compartment lined in matching rosewood veneer with adjustable glass shelving. The contrast between the transparency of the glass and the opulence of the rosewood creates a balanced interplay between visual lightness and material density.

The lower section consists of two large doors that open to reveal a grid of small internal drawers with integrated recessed pulls. The drawers are organized in a highly functional layout, ideal for storing documents, jewelry, or other small items, and the cabinet’s internal architecture is as thoughtfully constructed as its outer appearance. All components are crafted in solid or veneered rosewood with carefully matched grains and joinery details. The cabinet rests on a distinctive base composed of six U-shaped legs in solid rosewood, each carved with an open oval cut-out that introduces negative space and reduces the visual mass of the structure.

Ib Kofod-Larsen (1921–2003) was among the most prominent figures in postwar Scandinavian design, known for his sculptural furniture and mastery of wood. His work combined Danish modernist principles with an international sensibility and was produced by a number of notable Scandinavian manufacturers, including Seffle Möbelfabrik in Sweden. Seffle was recognized for producing high-quality cabinetry and case goods during the mid-20th century, particularly in richly grained exotic hardwoods.

Condition is good vintage, with expected signs of age and use. The rosewood retains a deep natural sheen and patina, while minor wear and surface markings are consistent with careful use over time. The glass is intact and clear, and the interior drawers and hardware function smoothly.
