Information

This rare and sculpturally refined easy chair was designed by the Danish duo Ib Madsen and Acton Schubell and produced by Madsen & Schubell in Denmark during the 1950s. It stands as a quintessential example of Danish mid-century modernism, featuring organic form, ergonomic comfort, and elegant material use.

The frame is crafted from dark-stained beech wood, skillfully shaped into a flowing, rounded silhouette. The front and rear legs are subtly tapered and splayed, connected by sculpted horizontal stretchers that not only reinforce the structure but also contribute to the visual rhythm of the design. The armrests are gently arched and curve seamlessly into the uprights, emphasizing the continuity and meticulous craftsmanship of the piece.

The upholstered shell, which forms both the seat and the high, concave backrest, is covered in its original fabric— a finely textured wool blend in a natural beige tone, lightly speckled with subtle earthy hues. The inner seat cushion contrasts in a warm brown, providing tonal and tactile differentiation, which highlights the layering of materials and forms. The backrest is button-tufted, enhancing the sculptural volume and nodding to traditional upholstery techniques.

Ib Madsen and Acton Schubell were known for their ergonomic furniture designs and emphasis on human-centered form during the 1950s and early 1960s. Their work typically combined organic Scandinavian aesthetics with a focus on lumbar support and seating posture. The pieces produced by Madsen & Schubell are celebrated for their bold yet refined silhouettes and remain highly sought-after by collectors of Danish modern furniture.

This chair is in excellent vintage condition, with its original upholstery showing only light and even wear. The beech frame has been carefully preserved, with the dark stained finish intact and only minor signs of age consistent with gentle use.

The chair measures 66 cm in width, 80 cm in depth, and 82 cm in height, with a seat height of 38 cm (approximately 26 x 31.5 x 32.3 inches, seat height 15 inches).
