Ivar Ålenius-Björk mirror
This table mirror, model 4851, was designed by Ivar Ålenius-Björk and produced by Ystad Metall in Sweden after 1942. The mirror features a circular reflective surface held within a thin brass frame, mounted on a pivoting axis that allows for angle adjustment. The frame is supported by a rectangular brass base, giving it a stable and balanced stance. The back of the mirror is finished with a warm-toned wood panel, providing a subtle contrast to the brass structure and enhancing the overall material richness.
The condition is good vintage with visible signs of age and patina, including surface marks and oxidation that lend character and authenticity to the piece. The mirror glass shows small age-related spots, typical for a piece of this period, and the brass has developed a warm, naturally aged finish.
Ivar Ålenius-Björk (1905–1978) was a prominent Swedish sculptor and designer, known for his elegant metalwork and for numerous designs for Ystad Metall, one of Sweden’s most important producers of decorative metal objects during the 20th century. This mirror is a fine example of his work, reflecting his ability to combine sculptural form with functional design. The clean circular geometry and slender frame align with the Scandinavian modernist aesthetic, prioritizing simplicity and refined proportions.
The provenance of this particular mirror adds significance, as it comes from the collection of Swedish artist and photographer Denise Grünstein (1950–2023), known for her highly expressive and poetic photographic works. This context ties the piece to Sweden’s rich artistic and design heritage.
