Jean Gillon sofa
The Rodeio sofa was designed by Jean Gillon and produced by WoodArt in Brazil during the 1960s. Constructed from solid rosewood, the frame displays a pronounced grain pattern characteristic of the tropical hardwood, paired with original cognac-toned leather upholstery and brass hardware. The design features a sculptural wooden structure with thick, tapered legs supporting a continuous low-profile base. The side supports extend into carved, upward-curving armrests that secure the upholstery via visible leather straps and brass fasteners, forming a suspension system integral to Gillon’s distinctive construction method.
The leather upholstery is tufted with stitched leather buttons and reinforced seams. It exhibits a moderate patina with creasing and minor surface wear consistent with its age. The three-seat cushion is a continuous pad that rests in a sling-like configuration, suspended over the frame by leather straps fastened at the rear with brass buckles. The backrest employs a similar suspended construction, creating a cohesive support system that is visible from the rear, lending the sofa a dynamic and architectural quality from all viewpoints.
Jean Gillon, a Romanian-born designer who emigrated to Brazil, was a pivotal figure in the country’s modernist design movement. His work combines refined European craftsmanship with the use of tropical hardwoods and artisanal Brazilian techniques. Gillon founded WoodArt in the 1960s as a studio focused on high-end furniture production. Due to their limited production and sculptural qualities, Gillon’s pieces, particularly those in original condition, are highly sought after.
This sofa is an example of mid-century Brazilian design, merging natural robust materials with sophisticated joinery and an emphasis on tactile comfort. The dimensions are 220 centimeters in width, 95 centimeters in depth, and 77 centimeters in height, with a seat height of 40 centimeters (approximately 86.6 by 37.4 by 30.3 inches, seat height 15.7 inches). The sofa remains in very good original condition, showing visible signs of use on the leather and minor wear on the wooden frame, consistent with its age.
