This is a bureau or side table, model 384, designed by Kai Kristiansen and produced by Aksel Kjersgaard in Denmark during the 1950s. The piece represents the elegant and efficient design language characteristic of Scandinavian mid-century modernism, emphasizing clean lines, material richness, and practical proportions. Kai Kristiansen, born in 1929, is one of Denmark’s most respected furniture designers, known for his ability to combine functional design with sophisticated detailing. He studied under Kaare Klint at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and began his own practice in the early 1950s. His collaboration with Aksel Kjersgaard led to the production of numerous pieces now regarded as classics, often noted for their precise joinery, floating proportions, and understated decorative elements.
