Lisa Johansson-Pape ceiling lamp

A rare model 75-002 ceiling lamp designed by Lisa Johansson-Pape and produced by Stockmann-Orno in Finland during the 1950s. The lamp is constructed from brass and its original finely pleated fabric and measures approximately 60 cm in diameter × 35 cm high (23.6 × 13.8 in).

The design is dominated by its broad, shallow circular shade, formed from tightly gathered fabric stretched over a delicate metal framework. Rather than creating a simple continuous dome, the structure changes angle in distinct stages: a narrow upper section expands outward to the lamp’s widest circumference before tapering inward toward the centre. The construction gives the shade an unusually architectural profile while retaining the visual lightness associated with textile lighting.

Hundreds of fine radial pleats run from the centre toward the perimeter. Their repetition accentuates the geometry of the supporting rings beneath the fabric and gives the lamp a strong graphic quality when viewed directly from below. In daylight, the off-white textile appears almost weightless, with the internal framework only subtly visible through the material.

The brass fittings provide a restrained counterpoint to the textile shade. A polished brass ceiling cup connects the fixture closely to the ceiling, while a shallow brass element closes the shade at its lower centre. This is finished with a particularly delicate ornamental finial composed of small looping wire forms. The combination of the expansive textile surface and relatively small brass details keeps the composition visually balanced.

The character changes considerably when the lamp is illuminated. Light passes through the original fabric, emphasizing every fold and revealing the circular framework as a series of dark concentric lines. The shade becomes a warm, glowing volume rather than simply a surface, while light escaping above the fixture also produces a soft halo across the ceiling. Viewed from underneath, the radial pleating creates an almost sunburst-like pattern around the central brass fitting.

Lisa Johansson-Pape (1907–1989) was one of Finland’s most significant 20th-century lighting designers. Trained as a furniture designer at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in Helsinki, she increasingly concentrated on lighting during the 1930s and developed a long association with the Finnish manufacturer Orno. Her work was characterized by an understanding of light itself as the primary element of a fixture, with form and material used to diffuse, reflect or direct it rather than functioning as decoration alone.

Orno was founded in Helsinki in 1921 and became one of Finland’s principal lighting manufacturers. The company was acquired by the Stockmann department-store group in the 1930s and is consequently often referred to as Stockmann-Orno. Through designers including Johansson-Pape, the manufacturer played an important role in the development and international recognition of Finnish modern lighting during the mid-20th century.

Model 75-002 demonstrates the softer and more decorative side of Johansson-Pape’s modernism. The design avoids the hard geometry and exposed industrial materials found in much post-war lighting, instead obtaining its structure from textile tension, repetition and proportion. Its generous diameter gives it considerable presence, yet the translucency of the fabric and fineness of the pleating prevent the fixture from appearing heavy. The result combines Scandinavian functionalism with a refined domestic quality characteristic of Johansson-Pape’s approach to interior lighting.

The lamp remains in good vintage condition. The original fabric shows minor age-related wear and subtle tonal variation, while the brass elements display small marks, scratches, oxidation and patina consistent with age and use. These traces have been retained rather than refinished and contribute to the fixture’s original vintage character.
