Luigi Crassevig rocking chair
The frame is made from oak with a warm, medium-brown tone and clearly visible grain. The laminated wood is shaped into broad, continuous curves, providing both structural stability and the rocking movement. The seat and high, reclining backrest are formed from wide strips of dark cognac-brown leather, interwoven in a regular basket-weave pattern. The leather follows the curvature of the chair, creating a continuous seating surface that extends from the front edge of the seat to the slightly rolled upper edge of the backrest. The contrast between the lighter oak and the darker leather emphasizes the chair’s construction and the relationship between its rigid supporting frame and flexible seating surface.
Luigi Crassevig was an Italian furniture designer and entrepreneur associated with the development of bentwood furniture in the second half of the twentieth century. The Crassevig company, established in Italy in 1969, became known for its expertise in wood bending and laminated timber construction. Its production combined traditional woodworking techniques with industrial manufacturing processes, particularly in the development of chairs and seating furniture characterized by curved wooden structures.
The Dondolo model reflects the experimental approach to furniture design that developed in Italy during the 1960s and 1970s. Its construction explores the structural possibilities of bent laminated wood, reducing the conventional distinction between legs, runners, and armrests. The chair also draws on the longer tradition of European bentwood furniture while incorporating the informal, low seating position and expressive organic forms associated with Italian modernist design of the period. The woven leather introduces a traditional material and craft technique into an otherwise highly geometric and structurally considered design.
The chair remains in good vintage condition, with visible signs of age and use consistent with its production period. The oak frame displays surface wear, minor scratches, variations in coloration, and a naturally developed patina, particularly along the armrests and rocking runners. The leather has acquired a rich, uneven brown patina, with areas of darkening, lighter wear, creasing, and superficial marks across the woven strips. These variations are especially visible along the seating surface and backrest. The original character of the materials and construction remains clearly apparent.
