Maija-Liisa Vasenius wall sculptures
These rare wall sculptures were designed by Finnish artist Maija-Liisa Vasenius and produced by Kalevala Koru in Finland during the 1960s. The compositions consist of ceramic elements glazed in a deep cobalt blue, each piece featuring intricate embossed circular patterns that add a richly textured surface. Suspended by metal wire, the sculptures incorporate matching beads that enhance their mobile-like quality, lending a sense of movement and lightness to the vertical arrangements.
The geometric forms vary across the sculptures, including diamonds, rounds, circles, and more abstract shapes, arranged symmetrically to emphasize rhythm and flow. This work reflects the mid-century Scandinavian interest in blending traditional craftsmanship with modernist abstraction. The glossy, textured surfaces attest to the careful manual techniques involved in production. A paper label affixed to the reverse of one sculpture confirms the maker as Kalevala Koru, with the inscription “Handmade in Finland,” verifying their artisanal origin.
Both sculptures are preserved in very good vintage condition, exhibiting minor wear consistent with age and handling. These pieces represent an important part of Finnish modernist ceramic art and are rare examples of wall-mounted decorative sculpture from this period.
The left sculpture measures 35 cm wide, 2 cm deep, and 70 cm high (approximately 13.8 x 0.8 x 27.6 inches), while the right sculpture measures 17.5 cm wide, 2 cm deep, and 98 cm high (approximately 6.9 x 0.8 x 38.6 inches).
