Mario Bellini sofa
This rare modular sofa, model Amanta, was designed by Italian architect Mario Bellini in 1966 and produced by the pioneering manufacturer C&B Italia. A landmark in the development of modular seating, the Amanta was one of the first systems to employ industrial materials and processes for domestic furniture on a large scale. The set shown here consists of three connected seating elements, offering flexibility in configuration while maintaining a cohesive aesthetic.
The structural frame is composed of white molded plastic shells, designed with recessed channels to house elastic retaining straps. These shells form a rigid yet lightweight support for the upholstered cushions. Each element rests on small black rubber feet which double as discreet casters, allowing for mobility without disrupting the visual balance. The cushions are upholstered in their original dark brown corduroy fabric, which features a pronounced vertical rib texture. The material has softened over time, displaying areas of light wear consistent with use and age.
The upholstery’s deep chocolate hue contrasts with the white plastic bases, emphasizing the modular design’s formal clarity. The seating units exhibit a plush, segmented profile, with thick cushions that are individually button-tufted and generously filled. Materials used include stamped Fiberlite for the frame, Dacron fiberfill for the cushion padding, and Honeylan for the lower cushion layers—highlighted on the original manufacturer’s fabric tag, still intact beneath one unit.
Mario Bellini, an influential figure in post-war Italian design, created the Amanta system as a response to evolving domestic habits in the 1960s. His work explored the intersection of architecture, technology, and furniture design, and this model reflects his interest in modularity, user adaptability, and expressive form. Bellini’s long-standing collaborations with C&B Italia—soon to become B&B Italia—were instrumental in redefining modern seating with experimental plastics and responsive foam technologies.
The sofa remains in good vintage condition, with signs of usage and natural patina in both the plastic shells and corduroy fabric. It is structurally sound, with authentic components and a preserved surface quality that highlights its period character and integrity.
Dimensions for the assembled three-seat unit are 245 cm in width, 85 cm in depth, and 70 cm in height (96.5 x 33.5 x 27.6 inches), with a seat height of 42 cm (16.5 inches).
