Mats Theselius easy chairs
This set, consisting of two easy chairs and one stool from the Bruno series, was designed by Mats Theselius and produced by Källemo in Sweden in 1997. The pieces combine copper frames with natural tan leather, creating a material contrast that reflects Theselius’ interest in expressive, industrially influenced craftsmanship. The construction is visually light but structurally robust, with the curved leather surfaces supported by slender, tubular legs.
Each chair features a continuous leather shell forming the seat, backrest, and armrests. The edges are wrapped around the frame and secured with exposed fasteners, creating a distinctive rhythm along the contours. The leather is vegetable-tanned and untreated, allowing natural variations, markings, and patina to develop over time. Its warm tone contrasts with the darker oxidized finish of the copper legs and structural elements. The legs are gently curved and slightly splayed, adding stability and a soft sculptural character to the otherwise minimal form.
The accompanying stool follows the same construction principles, with a single curved leather element suspended over four copper legs. This allows the stool to function both as a footrest and as an independent seating object. The arc of the leather creates a flexible surface that subtly adjusts to weight while maintaining structural integrity.
Mats Theselius is known for his experimental approach to furniture design, often exploring the meeting point between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary expression. The Bruno series demonstrates this balance: the untreated leather ages with use, while the copper elements carry an industrial precision. Källemo, the Swedish manufacturer, is recognized for producing design-driven furniture that maintains high material quality and artisanal execution.
The condition of the set is good vintage with visible signs of usage and patina on both leather and metal surfaces. The leather shows natural marks, tonal variations, and wear consistent with age. The copper frame displays areas of oxidation, adding to the characteristic material expression of the series.
The dimensions of each chair are 57 cm in width, 70 cm in depth, and 71.5 cm in height, with a seat height of 41 cm. This corresponds to approximately 22.4 inches by 27.6 inches by 28.1 inches, with a seat height of 16.1 inches.
The stool measures 56 cm in width, 32 cm in depth, and 41 cm in height, corresponding to approximately 22 inches by 12.6 inches by 16.1 inches.
