Melchior Wernstedt table lamp
This rare table lamp, model 25760, designed by Melchior Wernstedt and produced in 1922 by Nordiska Kompaniet in Sweden, is a distinguished example of the Swedish Grace period—a stylistic movement that emerged in the early 20th century, blending classical restraint with modern sensibilities. The lamp exemplifies this aesthetic through its harmonious proportions, subtle ornamentation, and a refined interplay of color and material.
The design is anchored by a cylindrical stem made of black lacquered metal, which rises vertically from a round base. The base itself has a softly curved profile, offering visual weight and stability while echoing neoclassical forms in its simplicity. Brass accents are strategically applied at key junctions—at the base, stem, and finial—introducing warmth and decorative contrast to the otherwise dark structure. These brass details are not merely ornamental; they serve to enhance the sculptural definition of the lamp and underscore its architectural composition.
The shade is formed from dark green painted metal, shaped into a slightly flared conical profile. Its surface shows a subtle, naturally developed patina, consistent with its age and authentic to the lamp’s nearly century-old history. Brass trim lines the edge of the shade, visually connecting with the other brass elements and creating a cohesive, balanced aesthetic. The shade is crowned by a small, decorative key finial in brass, reinforcing the neoclassical undertones of the piece.
Melchior Wernstedt (1879–1938) was a Swedish architect and designer known for his role in bringing classical order and elegance into early modern Swedish design. His work often balanced structural clarity with decorative refinement—qualities that are clearly manifested in this lamp. Produced by Nordiska Kompaniet (NK), one of Sweden’s premier furniture and design manufacturers, the lamp also reflects the high standards of craftsmanship and design innovation for which NK was known in the early 20th century.
The lamp remains in well-preserved vintage condition. The black lacquered metal shows minor surface wear consistent with age, and the brass components display a gentle patina that enhances their visual depth. The overall structure is intact, and the aesthetic integrity of the piece is maintained.
The lamp measures 34.5 cm in diameter and 51.5 cm in height, corresponding to approximately 13.6 inches in diameter and 20.3 inches in height.
