Mogens Koch desk
This rare and historically significant desk was designed by Mogens Koch in 1935 and executed by master cabinetmaker N. C. Jensen Kjær in Denmark. Koch, a central figure in Danish functionalist design, was known for his uncompromising craftsmanship, architectural precision, and dedication to utility without sacrificing elegance. His works often balanced restrained proportions with refined details, qualities that are clearly present in this piece.
The desk is crafted in teak, a favored hardwood in mid-century Scandinavian furniture for its durability, dimensional stability, and rich color. The top is clad in the original natural pigskin leather, showing a patina that speaks to decades of use. Pigskin was a prestigious and durable choice for writing surfaces in the early to mid-20th century, valued for its fine grain and resilience. The rounded corners of the top are protected with brass caps, a functional and decorative feature that echoes the brass ferrules at the base of the legs. Beneath the writing surface, a concealed compartment provides segmented storage, designed with precision joinery and attention to organizational needs.
The structure is supported by four round legs connected with stretchers for stability, a configuration that reflects both cabinetmaking tradition and modernist sensibilities. The desk remains in good vintage condition with signs of wear and an even patina consistent with age and use. It stands as a testament to Koch’s ability to merge architectural clarity with fine furniture-making, and to N. C. Jensen Kjær’s exceptional execution.
