Niels O. Møller dining chairs
This rare set of ten dining chairs, model 75, was designed by Niels O. Møller and produced by J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the 1950s. The design is one of Møller’s most enduring and recognizable contributions to Danish modern furniture, exemplifying his dedication to craftsmanship, comfort, and refined simplicity.
The chairs are constructed in solid oak with a warm, honey-toned finish that highlights the natural grain of the wood. Each seat is handwoven in hemp cord, a durable and flexible material that not only provides resilience and comfort but also reflects the strong tradition of Danish craft techniques. The seats are slightly curved, adapting to the human form, while the gently rounded backrest gives subtle support without breaking the chair’s clean silhouette. The legs taper elegantly, softening the geometry of the frame and adding to the overall sense of balance and lightness.
Møller founded his workshop in 1944, establishing a reputation for uncompromising quality and precision in joinery. His designs were never mass-produced in the conventional sense, but instead crafted with a focus on traditional methods combined with modernist principles of function and form. Model 75 embodies these values, being straightforward in appearance yet complex in detail, with seamless transitions between the frame and backrest and perfectly executed hand weaving.
The set remains in good vintage condition, showing minor signs of use consistent with age, while the chairs have been well-preserved. Their character, material integrity, and craftsmanship remain intact, offering a fine example of Scandinavian modernism’s pursuit of timeless, functional beauty.
