Niels O. Møller dining chairs
This is a rare set of six model 78 dining chairs designed by Niels O. Møller and produced by J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the 1960s. The model is a benchmark of Danish mid-century design, notable for its seamless joinery, sculptural frame, and restrained elegance.
The chairs are crafted in solid rosewood, a dense tropical hardwood prized for its fine grain and rich reddish-brown to dark brown coloration with natural figuring. The wood is finished with a soft, satin sheen that enhances the organic curvature of the frames. The design features gently tapering legs and a subtly contoured seat. The three horizontal rails forming the backrest are each carved with slight concavity for ergonomic support, creating a visually light but structurally sound profile. The seats are woven with the original blue textile braid in a checkerboard pattern. The woven seats show signs of light use with some expected patina but remain intact and supportive. The textile has a muted blue-grey tone, which complements the darker tones of the rosewood.
Niels O. Møller, who trained as a cabinetmaker, founded his own furniture company in 1944 and developed a distinctive style that combined traditional woodworking with modernist clarity. Model 78 is one of his most refined armless chair designs, prized for its balance of comfort, craftsmanship, and understated luxury. The chairs are marked beneath the seat with the original manufacturer’s label from J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik.
Each chair measures 47.5 cm in width, 48 cm in depth, and 80.5 cm in height, with a seat height of 44 cm (18.7 x 18.9 x 31.7 inches, seat height 17.3 inches).
