Niels O. Møller dining chairs
This set of six dining chairs, model 71, was designed by Niels O. Møller and produced by J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik in Denmark. The chairs are crafted in teak, a material widely favored in Danish modern design for its strength, warm tonality, and fine grain. The seats are hand-woven in natural hemp cord, demonstrating the strong craft tradition that characterized the production of this factory and the broader Scandinavian modern movement.
The design, first introduced in 1951, embodies the refined sculptural qualities that define Møller’s work. The backrests are elegantly curved, offering both structural integrity and ergonomic comfort, while the legs taper gracefully to the floor. The joinery is precise and subtle, ensuring a seamless visual flow between components. This understated aesthetic aligns with Møller’s dedication to quality craftsmanship and his belief in durability combined with elegance.
Niels O. Møller founded J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik in 1944, and the company quickly gained recognition for its hand-finished furniture and dedication to high standards of production. Model 71 is among his most celebrated designs, admired for its balance of simplicity, organic form, and functional clarity. The woven hemp seat is both a practical and tactile element, designed for resilience and comfort.
The chairs remain in good vintage condition with minor signs of use and a natural patina consistent with age. The teak frames have aged gracefully, and the cord seats retain their strength and authenticity, underlining the enduring quality of Danish mid-century craftsmanship.
