Information

This rare table lamp model Kongelys, designed by Danish designer Niels Rasmussen Thykier and produced by Fog & Mørup in Denmark in 1937, is an exceptional example of early Scandinavian modernist design. Constructed from brass and plastic, the lamp reflects the precision and functional integrity characteristic of the period, as well as the refined material choices that helped define Scandinavian design during the 1930s. Over time, the brass has developed a natural patina, adding tonal depth and warmth, particularly along the base and stem, which contributes to its vintage character.

The design of the Kongelys lamp is minimalist and geometric. It features a circular base supporting a slim cylindrical stem that subtly tapers near its junction with the socket housing. At the top of the stem sits a wide conical shade made of translucent plastic, framed by brass. The double-layered construction of the shade enhances the light-scattering properties, diffusing the light softly and creating a warm, inviting ambiance. The symmetrical conical shape of the lamp gives it a visually balanced, architectural quality that adds an element of elegance to any space.

The name “Kongelys” (meaning “King’s Light”) was inspired by the lamp’s origin as a gift for King Christian X of Denmark on the occasion of his 25th anniversary as monarch. The first prototype of this lamp was presented to the King, imbuing the object with a sense of historical and cultural significance. This connection to Danish royal history elevates the lamp from a mere functional object to an important piece of Danish design heritage.

Niels Rasmussen Thykier, the designer of the Kongelys lamp, was active in the early-to-mid 20th century and worked with several prominent Danish manufacturers. Known for his meticulous craftsmanship and commitment to functional, durable design, Thykier’s work helped shape the modernist design landscape in Denmark. Fog & Mørup, established in the early 1900s, was one of Denmark’s leading lighting producers, known for their contribution to Scandinavian lighting design and their collaboration with many renowned designers of the time.

The lamp is in good vintage condition, with surface oxidation and wear consistent with its age and use. The brass components remain structurally intact, while the plastic diffuser retains its opacity and form, showing only minor signs of aging. All parts of the lamp are original, which adds to its value as a collectible.
