Olof Kettunen stools
This pair of stools was designed by Olof Kettunen and produced by J. Merivaara in Finland during the 1950s. Each stool features a molded plywood seat finished in black lacquer, shaped into a distinctive saddle-like curve with two circular cut-outs that function as integrated handles, making the stools easy to lift and move. The organic contour of the seat provides comfort while also giving the design its instantly recognizable character.
The seat rests on a base of tubular steel legs, painted in a light tone that contrasts with the black seat. The frame construction is straightforward and functional, consistent with postwar Scandinavian design ideals of economy, durability, and lightness. The lacquered plywood surfaces display an even wear pattern with scratches and edge wear, giving the piece an appealing patina without compromising its structural integrity. The painted legs show traces of use and light abrasions, characteristic of original mid-century production.
Olof Kettunen was a Finnish designer who contributed to the development of functional, modernist furniture for everyday use. J. Merivaara, a major Finnish manufacturer founded in the 19th century, was known for producing high-quality bentwood and plywood furniture and played a significant role in popularizing modern design in Finland and beyond during the mid-20th century.
These stools represent the spirit of mid-century Scandinavian design, balancing utilitarian construction with playful sculptural elements. They are versatile pieces that function both as seating and as small accent tables.
Dimensions are 52 cm wide, 30 cm deep, and 54 cm high (20.5 x 11.8 x 21.3 inches), with a seat height of 41 cm (16.1 inches).
