PUB dining table
This is a rustic dining table crafted from solid pine, produced in the 1930s for the Paul U. Bergström (PUB) department store in Sweden. The design is reminiscent of the “Sportstugemöbler” series created by Axel Einar Hjorth during the same period, emphasizing simplicity, robust construction, and the use of natural materials suited to leisure homes and country retreats.
The table features a rectangular top with softly beveled edges and a visibly grained, lightly worn surface that retains its natural pale tone, showing attractive aging and patina. The top rests on a trestle-style base composed of two thick vertical supports, each flanked by solidly shaped foot blocks for stability. The supports are connected by a horizontal stretcher, secured with exposed wooden dowels, reinforcing the robust, handcrafted character of the piece.
The pine wood exhibits warm, golden tones with expressive grain patterns and occasional knots, which are characteristic of the rustic style and contribute to the tactile, organic presence of the table. The craftsmanship focuses on durability and functional design, with the construction details left visible as part of the aesthetic.
PUB, or Paul U. Bergström, was a significant Swedish retail establishment known for its high-quality goods, and during the interwar period, it offered furniture that aligned with the emerging taste for simpler, nature-oriented interiors, parallel to the designs of notable figures like Hjorth.
The dimensions of the table are 160 cm in width, 73.5 cm in depth, and 73 cm in height, which translates approximately to 63 inches wide, 28.9 inches deep, and 28.7 inches high. The condition is good, with signs of wear and age-related marks that enhance the authenticity and appeal of the piece.
