Paavo Tynell floor lamps
This very rare pair of floor lamps, model 9602, also known as the “Chinese Hat” was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1950s. These lamps are exemplary of Tynell’s refined craftsmanship and distinctive use of natural materials, blending Scandinavian mid-century modern aesthetics with artisanal detailing.
Each lamp features a slender brass stem wrapped in finely woven cane, a signature element of Tynell’s lighting designs that adds warmth and tactile texture. The structure is supported by a circular brass base, providing stability while maintaining an elegant and lightweight visual profile. The standout feature is the conical rattan shade, which creates a striking silhouette and diffuses light softly. The intricate weave of the rattan produces a captivating play of light and shadow, casting distinctive patterns when illuminated.
Paavo Tynell was a pioneering Finnish lighting designer, celebrated for merging functional design with decorative artistry. His collaboration with Taito Oy led to some of the most iconic and collectible Scandinavian lighting pieces from the mid-century era.
