Information

This is a rare three-seat sofa, model MP-091, designed by Percival Lafer and produced by Lafer MP in Brazil in the 1960s. A hallmark of Brazilian mid-century modernism, this model exemplifies Lafer’s innovative approach to lounge seating through the combination of structural transparency, ergonomic softness, and high-grade materials. The sofa’s frame is constructed from solid rosewood, joined into a rectangular open base with squared sides and continuous stretchers that form a visually grounded foundation.

The seat and backrest are composed of a single, integrated cushion made from black leather, generously padded and tailored into broad horizontal segments with visible tufting. The leather is suspended within the rosewood frame using a series of thick natural leather straps, secured with wooden toggles along the rear horizontal rail. These structural leather supports are both functional and decorative, contributing to the sofa’s iconic rear profile. The leather upholstery has developed a deep patina with visible creasing and light scuffing, attesting to its age and usage while retaining its integrity and original stitching.

Percival Lafer, born in 1936, is regarded as a key figure in 20th-century Brazilian design. Known for his commitment to comfort, craftsmanship, and accessible luxury, Lafer designed a range of modular lounge furniture that challenged the rigid formality of European modernism. The MP-091 series is among his most celebrated, with its hammock-like suspension system, exposed joinery, and relaxed seating geometry.

This particular example is in good vintage condition with signs of use appropriate to its age. The leather shows consistent wear, with softened areas and minor cosmetic distress, while the rosewood frame exhibits a warm tone with scattered surface marks. The structural components, including leather straps and fastenings, are complete and fully functional.

The dimensions are 200 cm in width (78.7 inches), 80 cm in depth (31.5 inches), and 68 cm in height (26.8 inches), with a seat height of 38 cm (15 inches). This sofa is part of a complete set, with matching two-seat sofa and easy chair also available, offering a comprehensive representation of mid-century Brazilian lounge design. The MP-091 three-seater stands as a distinctive and tactile piece that integrates relaxed proportions with sculptural tension and natural material character.
