Percival Lafer sofa
This rare three-seater sofa was designed by Brazilian designer Percival Lafer in the 1970s and produced by Lafer MP, a manufacturer celebrated for its innovative and highly engineered mid-century furniture. The piece exemplifies Lafer’s approach of combining industrial techniques with luxurious natural materials, producing furniture that is both sculptural and comfort-oriented.
The frame is constructed from solid rosewood with a deep, rich tone, featuring visible grain patterns and a robust architectural structure. The framework is accentuated by bolted joinery and leather straps, a signature detail in Lafer’s work, where form and function are unified. The horizontal rails of the structure support the suspended seat and backrest cushions, attached via wide saddle leather straps that are looped over the wood and fastened with turned wooden buttons and metal hardware. Chrome fittings subtly reinforce the structure without overwhelming the visual language of the design.
The sofa is upholstered in high-quality cognac-colored leather that has developed a warm patina over time. The leather displays some visible signs of wear consistent with vintage use, most notably damage to the leather on the back of one armrest. Despite this, the leather remains soft and intact on the seating and front surfaces, offering comfort while retaining its visual appeal. The cushioning includes prominent cylindrical headrests and deeply padded seat and back elements, offering ergonomic support in a relaxed, low-profile form.
Produced in Brazil by Lafer MP, this sofa belongs to a family of modular seating systems designed by Lafer and reflects the tropical modernist ethos of Brazilian mid-century design. The design merges international modernism with local material richness and craftsmanship. The sofa was conceived as part of a seating group, and a matching pair of easy chairs is also available, making it suitable for a cohesive lounge setting.
Condition is good vintage overall, with patina, minor scuffs, and the aforementioned wear to one rear armrest cushion. The rosewood frame is structurally sound and retains its original finish and visual impact.
