Poul Hansen easy chairs
This rare set of three easy chairs was designed by Poul Hansen and produced in Denmark between 1965 and 1966. Constructed from solid oak with a warm medium-brown finish, the chairs highlight the natural grain and texture of the wood. The design emphasizes exposed joinery and functional simplicity, reflecting core principles of mid-century Scandinavian design. Each chair retains its original wool upholstery in distinct colors—blue, red, and green—creating a subtle visual rhythm while maintaining cohesion within the set.
The chairs feature flat, angled side profiles with broad back legs that lean slightly rearward for support. Linear armrests rest on extended vertical uprights, integrating seamlessly into the side frame. The backrest and seat are formed from flat upholstered panels mounted directly within the wooden frame, offering firm but comfortable seating. The rear legs are splayed, forming a trapezoidal silhouette that enhances both stability and architectural clarity.
Though Poul Hansen is a lesser-documented figure in Danish design history, these chairs demonstrate a high level of craftsmanship, attention to proportion, and material balance. The design aligns with the broader ethos of Danish modernism in the mid-1960s, valuing honest materials, restrained aesthetics, and structural clarity.
All three chairs are in good vintage condition. The oak exhibits an even patina with minor surface wear, and the original upholstery remains intact with light signs of age. The varied fabric colors are well-preserved and structurally sound.
Each chair measures 61.5 cm in width, 72 cm in depth, and 69 cm in height, approximately 24.2 inches wide, 28.3 inches deep, and 27.2 inches high. The seat height is 35 cm, or about 13.8 inches. This set represents a thoughtful combination of form, function, and material integrity typical of Danish mid-century design.
