Sideboards
This rare pair of small sideboards, designed by an unknown designer and produced in Denmark during the 1950s, exemplifies the functional yet expressive character of early mid-century modernism. Each cabinet is constructed with a teak body supported by a white-lacquered tubular metal frame, combining natural warmth with industrial materiality.
The fronts feature sliding doors finished in a two-tone lacquer of muted olive green and off-white, creating a playful geometric contrast against the otherwise restrained teak structure. The handles are integrated directly into the door panels and crafted from teak, reinforcing material continuity and visual harmony.
The design is compact and lightweight, elevated on slender legs with bent corners and cross-supports that provide structural stability while maintaining an open and airy appearance. This juxtaposition of teak with lacquered surfaces reflects the post-war Scandinavian exploration of mixed materials and color blocking.
Each cabinet’s interior offers a single storage compartment, making them suitable as nightstands or occasional storage units. Despite their modest size, the architectural clarity and chromatic detailing suggest these pieces were likely produced within the context of progressive Danish furniture studios experimenting with industrial materials for domestic use.
Both sideboards are in very good vintage condition, with lacquer surfaces showing minor age-related wear such as slight fading and surface irregularities. The teak displays a warm patina consistent with careful long-term use.
Each cabinet measures 69.5 cm in width, 33 cm in depth, and 64.5 cm in height, approximately 27.4 x 13 x 25.4 inches.
