Søren Hansen wingback easy chair
This rare wingback easy chair, model 4365, was conceived in Denmark in the 1960s and carries the hallmark precision of Fritz Hansen’s workshop. Its solid teak frame presents a warm, honeyed tone that complements the cognac brown leather shell. Over decades, the leather has acquired a rich patina, displaying subtle creasing and color variation in high-contact areas, evidence of both its durability and well-worn authenticity.
The chair’s silhouette is defined by a continuous leather shell that forms both seat and back, gently molded to cradle the body. The backrest rises to a tall height before flaring outward into pronounced wings that offer lateral head support. Underneath the suspended seat, hidden tensioned straps provide a resilient give, while the exposed teak arms, softly rounded and seamlessly integrated into the frame, reflect precise mortise-and-tenon joinery.
Søren Hansen, grandson of Fritz Hansen’s founder, brought a nuanced modernism to the family firm’s legacy. With model 4365, he balanced the clean lines of Scandinavian functionalism against an expressive use of materials, allowing the organic texture of leather and the warmth of teak to take visual precedence. The chair’s rectilinear base and unembellished frame create a restrained backdrop for its sculptural shell.
Founded in 1872, Fritz Hansen earned its reputation through collaborations with masters such as Arne Jacobsen and Hans J. Wegner. The production of this easy chair exemplifies the company’s commitment to innovation and craftsmanship, sustaining techniques that ensure structural integrity over generations.
This example remains in original, vintage condition. Aside from the natural surface wear of the leather, the frame retains its structural soundness, with no alterations from its original joinery. Its overall dimensions are 70.5 cm in width, 85 cm in depth and 102 cm in height, with a seat height of 38 cm. In imperial measurements, these correspond to approximately 27.8 inches wide, 33.5 inches deep, 40.2 inches high and a 15-inch seat height.
