Information

This is a height-adjustable working stool produced in Denmark during the 1940s. It combines robust functionality with elegant craftsmanship, making it a notable example of early 20th-century Scandinavian workshop furniture.

The stool features a circular seat upholstered in its original black leather. The leather has developed a rich patina over time, with signs of wear, scuffing, and some dry cracks, all consistent with age and authentic use. Despite these surface characteristics, the leather remains intact and structurally sound. The rotating seat is supported by a solid oak screw mechanism, allowing the height to be easily adjusted. The threaded central spindle and its corresponding wooden collar operate smoothly, demonstrating both the mechanical ingenuity and durability of the design.

The base is constructed from four splayed oak legs connected by a shaped cross stretcher. The warm honey-brown oak exhibits a tight grain with a natural, hand-finished appearance. The angled legs ensure excellent stability, allowing the stool to serve equally well in both workshop and domestic settings. The structural joints and threaded mechanism remain in good working condition, a testament to the high quality of Danish craftsmanship from this period.

This style of stool reflects the functionalist ethos prevalent in Scandinavian design of the 1930s and 1940s. Emphasis was placed on practical utility, honest materials, and straightforward construction. Such stools were commonly used in workshops, studios, and architectural offices, where adjustability and mobility were valued. Today, they are appreciated not only for their practicality but also for their sculptural simplicity and vintage character.

The stool measures 36.5 cm in diameter, with an adjustable seat height ranging from 53 cm to 69 cm. In inches, this corresponds approximately to 14.4 inches in diameter, with a height adjustable from 20.9 inches to 27.2 inches.
