Stools
This rare pair of three-legged stools was likely produced in Sweden during the 1950s by an unknown designer. Crafted entirely from solid pine, the stools exemplify mid-century Scandinavian values of craftsmanship, organic form, and appreciation for natural materials. The pine displays a warm amber hue with pronounced grain patterns that animate the surfaces, especially noticeable on the smoothly rounded seats and lathe-turned legs.
The design carries a playful, zoomorphic quality. Each leg tapers into an exaggerated teardrop-shaped foot, subtly evoking animal paws or droplets, which lends the stools a sense of softness and movement. The round seats are slightly dished for comfort and edged with smooth contours, enhancing both usability and tactile appeal. These distinctive leg forms and rounded proportions reveal influences from traditional Swedish woodworking, harmoniously blended with the modernist sensibilities of the postwar era.
Though unsigned, the stools resonate with folk-modern hybrid objects produced by rural Swedish workshops in the 1950s. During this time, Scandinavian designers often reinterpreted vernacular and rustic forms through functional modernism, creating pieces that feel both familiar and forward-looking. These stools may have been crafted as studio works or limited runs, emphasizing handmade quality over industrial production.
The pair is in very good vintage condition, retaining a well-preserved finish and a rich patina developed over decades. The wood shows minimal wear, with only minor surface marks consistent with careful use and age.
Each stool measures 30 cm in diameter and 41.5 cm in height, approximately 11.8 inches in diameter and 16.3 inches high.
