Information

This cylindrical pewter jar was designed in 1933 by Sylvia Stave and produced by C.G. Hallberg, one of Sweden’s most prominent silversmith firms during the early 20th century. The form consists of a simple round container with four evenly spaced circumferential ribs that provide both structural reinforcement and decorative articulation. The container tapers slightly at the base and is capped with a flush-fitting lid, centrally mounted with a cast pewter finial in the form of a stylized elephant. The elephant motif contributes a sculptural and whimsical quality to the otherwise austere form, introducing a subtle element of narrative and symbolic expression.

The surface is rendered in matte pewter with natural patination and light scratches consistent with age and use. The metal shows a soft silver-grey tonality, characteristic of untreated pewter, with darkened areas and oxidation visible along the grooves and recessed areas, particularly around the elephant finial and lid recess. The overall condition is good, with no structural defects or significant deformation.

Sylvia Stave (1908–1994) was an influential Swedish designer active in the 1930s. Though her career was relatively short, her output was highly original and marked by a modernist approach to form and material. She was especially known for her work in pewter and silver, often produced for C.G. Hallberg, where she served as artistic director. Her designs are characterized by geometric clarity and subtle playfulness, frequently incorporating animal figures or organic references into streamlined, functional forms. Her pieces are now considered rare and historically significant examples of Scandinavian modern design.

C.G. Hallberg, founded in the 1860s, was a major Swedish gold and silversmithing firm and official purveyor to the Royal Court. The company was known for its production of high-quality silver, gold, and pewter objects, including both traditional and avant-garde pieces during the interwar period. The firm’s collaboration with Sylvia Stave helped define a progressive aesthetic for Swedish decorative arts during the 1930s.

The jar measures 12.5 cm in diameter and 11.5 cm in height, equivalent to approximately 4.9 inches in diameter and 4.5 inches in height.
