Information

This rare desk or table lamp was produced by AB E. Hansson & Co in Malmö, Sweden, during the 1960s. The design is anonymous, but the combination of materials and the formal language place it firmly within the Scandinavian modern tradition of the postwar decades, with particular attention to contrast and material surface.

The lamp features a spun brass shade with a wide conical profile. Atop the shade is a secondary perforated cone made from off-white plastic. This upper element acts as both a diffuser and a decorative accent, with regular patterns of pinholes arranged in geometric rows. When the lamp is illuminated, the pinholes allow light to escape, creating ambient lighting effects. The lower edge of the shade is open, directing light downward in a focused yet warm distribution, typical of task lighting.

The stem of the lamp is gently tapered and wrapped in a synthetic reddish-brown snakeskin material. This cylindrical section adds both visual and tactile contrast to the smooth brass surfaces, with the texture of the synthetic covering providing a distinctive look. The stem terminates in a round, weighted brass base, slightly domed and proportioned to stabilize the overall composition. The base also houses a push-button switch. The lamp holder is suspended by a minimalist brass socket bracket with two arms extending to the underside of the shade, further contributing to the lamp’s clean lines and restrained aesthetic.

The brass components display a consistent natural patina, with light oxidation, minor surface scratches, and a matte, aged tone. The synthetic snakeskin wrapping remains intact and securely bonded, with no visible damage or peeling. The off-white plastic cone is in good vintage condition, with even coloration and no cracks or damage.

Although the designer of this lamp is unknown, it reflects the qualities of Swedish lighting design during the mid-century period, particularly in the integration of industrial materials with decorative details. AB E. Hansson & Co, based in Malmö, produced a limited range of lighting objects, often in small series or for local distribution.

This lamp embodies mid-century Scandinavian modern aesthetics through its functional geometry, warm material palette, and the interplay between ornament and restraint, making it a unique and striking piece.

It measures 35 cm in diameter and 45 cm in height (approximately 13.8 inches Ø x 17.7 inches H).
