Table lamp

This elegant Swedish table lamp, designed in the manner of Bertil Brisborg and most likely produced by Nordiska Kompaniet (NK) during the 1940s, embodies the refined balance of Scandinavian Modernism and the restrained luxury that defined Swedish decorative arts in the years surrounding the Second World War. Although the lamp remains unattributed, its sculptural silhouette, sophisticated material palette, and restrained detailing closely relate to Brisborg’s celebrated lighting designs created for NK during the 1940s and early 1950s.

Bertil Brisborg (1910–1993) was one of Sweden’s foremost lighting designers and served as chief lighting designer for Nordiska Kompaniet from the late 1930s onward. His work is characterised by elegant proportions, gently curved brass arms, luxurious yet understated materials, and an emphasis on warm, atmospheric light. Brisborg frequently incorporated leather, brass, lacquered metals, and finely crafted shades into his designs, producing lighting that combined modernist simplicity with exceptional craftsmanship. Today his lamps are among the most sought-after examples of Scandinavian twentieth-century lighting.

Founded in Stockholm in 1902, Nordiska Kompaniet became Sweden’s premier department store and one of Scandinavia’s most influential producers and retailers of high-quality furniture and lighting. Through its celebrated workshops, NK collaborated with leading designers including Axel Einar Hjorth, David Rosén, Carl Malmsten, and Bertil Brisborg, creating furnishings distinguished by impeccable craftsmanship and timeless Scandinavian elegance.

The lamp is crafted from solid brass with a circular weighted base supporting a slender rectangular column wrapped in richly patinated cognac-brown leather. The leather exhibits beautiful natural tonal variation developed over decades of use, lending the piece warmth and character. Two elegantly curved brass arms rise symmetrically from the column, each supporting a tapered conical shade. The lamp is fitted with woven textile shades that diffuse the light softly, complementing the warm tones of the brass and leather while creating a calm and intimate atmosphere. A discreet original push-button switch is integrated into the base, preserving the clean architectural composition.

The design exemplifies the Swedish interpretation of Scandinavian Modernism, where functionality is enriched through carefully selected natural materials and subtle decorative refinement. The contrast between polished brass, aged leather, and textured textile shades creates a sophisticated visual harmony without unnecessary ornament. The gently flowing brass arms introduce a graceful organic movement, while the geometric leather-clad column anchors the composition with architectural clarity. The result is a lamp that feels simultaneously luxurious, understated, and remarkably contemporary despite its age.

The lamp remains in good vintage condition with light wear consistent with age and use. The brass surfaces display an attractive natural patina with minor oxidation and surface marks, while the leather covering shows beautiful age-related colour variation that enhances its authenticity. The shades are in good condition and complement the lamp well, producing a warm and inviting illumination.
