Uno & Östen Kristiansson ceiling lamp

This early ceiling lamp, designed by Uno and Östen Kristiansson and produced by Luxus in Vittsjö, Sweden during the 1950s, exemplifies Scandinavian organic modernism paired with refined craftsmanship. The fixture’s central structure is constructed from solid oak, carefully sculpted with tapering arms and intersecting joints that support five pendant lamps. The suspension system uses cords arranged symmetrically to ensure even weight distribution and visual balance within the composition.

The five pendant shades are crafted from matte opaline glass, shaped into gently rounded, drop-like forms with narrow necks and wide lower openings. The satin finish on the glass diffuses light softly, creating an ambient glow that complements the warm, natural tones of the oak frame. The contrast between the organic curvature of the glass and the angular, hand-shaped oak structure produces a subtle yet dynamic interplay between materials and shapes.

Uno and Östen Kristiansson, founders of Luxus in 1950, were noted Swedish designers recognized for their contributions to lighting and furniture. Luxus specialized in producing high-quality lighting fixtures, and the 1950s and 60s mark the company’s most influential period. The lamp is preserved in very good vintage condition. Minor age-related wear is evident on the cords and fittings, but the structural integrity remains uncompromised. The opaline glass shades are intact, showing no visible cracks or chips. The oak components have developed a warm patina and exhibit only light surface wear consistent with age.
