Uno & Östen Kristiansson side tables
This rare modular collection of four side tables, including a plant stand, was designed by the Swedish duo Uno & Östen Kristiansson and produced by Luxus in Vittsjö, Sweden during the 1960s. The set exemplifies Scandinavian functionalist design through its minimalist aesthetic, high-quality materials, and versatile configurations. Each table features a veneered rosewood top supported by a precise, rectilinear frame crafted from brushed stainless steel, creating a harmonious balance between structural clarity and visual lightness.
The collection comprises four tables of varying sizes that can function independently or be arranged as a cohesive modular unit. The tallest piece is the plant stand, distinguished by a recessed black plastic insert set into the rosewood surface, designed for holding plants or decorative objects. The other three tables—small, medium, and large—offer a hierarchical range of dimensions, enabling nesting or linear arrangements suitable for gallery-style presentations or adaptable living spaces.
The rosewood tops display pronounced linear grain patterns and a deep reddish-brown color with darker figuring, finished with a soft semi-gloss sheen. The brushed steel legs are slender yet stable, with sharp, square profiles providing a refined contrast to the warm, organic quality of the wood. The craftsmanship is meticulous, with clean miters and precise joinery evident throughout.
Uno & Östen Kristiansson were influential figures in Swedish design, known for blending modernist ideals with artisanal details. Their family-run company, Luxus, gained recognition for exceptional lighting and furnishings that emphasized natural materials and spatial simplicity. This series of tables reflects their design philosophy, balancing practical utility with aesthetic coherence.
The collection is in very good vintage condition, showing minor wear consistent with age, including a light patina on the metal and a well-maintained finish on the rosewood surfaces.
