Victor Bernt dining chairs
This is a rare set of seven dining chairs designed by Danish architect Victor Bernt and produced in the 1950s by Søren Willadsen Møbelfabrik, a distinguished Danish furniture manufacturer known for its craftsmanship and collaborations with prominent designers of the mid-century period.
The chairs feature a distinct sculptural profile with an angular A-frame leg structure in solid pine wood, and seat and back elements formed from moulded wood finished in the original red lacquer. The lacquered surfaces exhibit visible wear, consistent with age and use, including areas of cracking and minor surface loss, particularly at the edges, adding a patinated character to the otherwise vibrant finish. The frames remain structurally sound, showcasing the maker’s hallmark Danish construction quality. The design reflects mid-century Scandinavian functionalism, marked by simplicity of form and careful attention to ergonomics and proportion. Bernt’s approach, though less widely documented than some of his contemporaries, fits within the broader movement of post-war Danish modernism focused on material honesty and efficient joinery.
Søren Willadsen Møbelfabrik, based in Vejen, Denmark, produced furniture that often carried the Danish Furnituremakers’ Control label, certifying quality standards in design and production—a label present on these chairs.
Dimensions for each chair are 52 cm wide by 49 cm deep by 71 cm high, with a seat height of 44 cm (20.5 x 19.3 x 28 inches, seat height 17.3 inches).
