Vilhelm Lauritzen attrib. sofa
This very rare sofa, attributed to Vilhelm Lauritzen and produced in Denmark during the 1940s, represents an early phase of Scandinavian modernism distinguished by its organic form and high-quality craftsmanship. The frame is constructed from mahogany, valued for its durability and rich, warm tone. The sofa has been reupholstered in Kvadrat™ wool fabric, a premium textile that enhances both the tactile comfort and visual appeal.
The design features a sculptural silhouette with a high, gently curved backrest that flows into wing-like, flared armrests. The fully tufted backrest adds structure and softness, balancing elegance with comfort. The thickly padded seat maintains a refined profile, while the slightly splayed legs provide stability and contribute to the sofa’s overall light and airy appearance.
Vilhelm Lauritzen, a prominent Danish architect and designer, was renowned for his functionalist approach and dedication to craftsmanship. Although better known for his architectural achievements, Lauritzen’s furniture designs embody the same principles of form, proportion, and material integrity.
Produced during a transitional period in Danish furniture making, this sofa bridges traditional craftsmanship with emerging industrial techniques, while still emphasizing hand-finishing and superior materials. It reflects the era’s focus on organic shapes, comfort, and seamless integration of furniture into modern interiors.
The sofa measures 200 cm in width, 75 cm in depth, and 87 cm in height, with a seat height of 40 cm (78.7 x 29.5 x 34.3 inches, seat height 15.7 inches).
