Wall lamps
This pair of wall lamps, model 8738, was produced by Hags in Austria during the 1950s and represents a compact and functional approach to mid-century lighting design. The lamps are executed entirely in brass and reflect a restrained industrial-modern aesthetic characteristic of post-war European lighting production.
Each lamp consists of a cylindrical brass shade mounted on a short articulated arm connected to a round wall plate. The shade is slightly tapered and open at the front, directing light forward and downward in a controlled and focused manner. The interior of the shade is finished in a light tone, enhancing light reflection and efficiency, while the exterior brass surface presents a warm golden hue with visible grain from the metalworking process. The joints and fittings are mechanically simple and precise, allowing for minor adjustment of the shade angle.
The brass surfaces show a well-preserved patina with subtle tonal variation, light surface marks, and minor scratches consistent with age and use. These signs of wear are even and unobtrusive, contributing to the material depth without affecting function. Overall, the lamps are in excellent vintage condition, retaining their original character and structural integrity.
Hags was an Austrian manufacturer known for producing practical and well-constructed lighting fixtures during the mid-20th century. Their designs often emphasized durability, clarity of form, and efficient light distribution rather than decorative excess. Model 8738 aligns with this philosophy, combining compact proportions with a clear functional purpose, suitable for use as reading lights, bedside lamps, or accent lighting in both residential and public interiors.
The design belongs firmly within the mid-century period, where brass was frequently used for its durability and visual warmth, and where lighting was increasingly treated as an integral architectural element rather than a purely decorative object.
Dimensions per lamp are approximately 13 cm in width, 26 cm in depth, and 18 cm in height, corresponding to about 5.1 x 10.2 x 7.1 inches.
