Hans Bergström floor lamps

This rare pair of floor lamps, model 560, was designed by Hans Bergström and produced in the 1950s by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden. These lamps exemplify Bergström’s distinctive design approach, combining sculptural refinement with functional lighting principles, all executed through the careful selection of materials and thoughtful proportions.

Each lamp is characterized by a conical brass shade, featuring a series of finely perforated holes along the lower edge. These perforations are not merely decorative—they allow light to escape laterally in a controlled and atmospheric manner, casting soft patterns and enhancing the ambient quality of the illumination. The shades are mounted with an adjustable swivel joint, enabling directional control over the light source, making the lamps well-suited for reading or accent lighting.

The slender stems are finished in a deep, matte dark blue lacquer that contrasts with the polished brass shades, adding a subtle visual tension and contributing to the understated elegance of the design. The circular bases are open-ring forms, echoing the lamp’s minimalist aesthetic and providing stability with a light, architectural presence. Constructed primarily from brass and lacquered steel, the lamps show a good level of preservation. The original proportions and finishes are retained, reflecting the careful maintenance of these period pieces.

Each lamp measures 18.5 cm in diameter, 35 cm in depth, and 118 cm in height (approximately 7.3 inches wide, 13.8 inches deep, and 46.5 inches high), giving them a slim and upright profile suitable for placement beside sofas, armchairs, or desks.

Hans Bergström (1910–1996), founder of Ateljé Lyktan, was one of Sweden’s most innovative lighting designers. Throughout the 1940s and 50s, his work consistently pushed the boundaries of form and material while prioritizing the experiential qualities of light. Ateljé Lyktan, under his direction, became a pioneering workshop for modern Swedish lighting, known for integrating functionalism with expressive design elements.

This pair of model 560 floor lamps represents a well-preserved and highly collectible example of Bergström’s mid-century production—marked by craftsmanship, subtle contrasts, and a strong sense of visual rhythm.
