Jacques Adnet attrib. armchair
This rare armchair is attributed to Jacques Adnet and was produced in France during the 1950s. Adnet, a prominent French designer and architect, is recognized for his role in the Art Deco movement and his later work that married modernist principles with a luxurious material palette. His designs are known for clean geometric forms enhanced by refined uses of leather, brass, and glass, balancing functionalism with elegance.
The chair features a minimalist black-lacquered metal frame with a geometric, linear silhouette characteristic of Adnet’s style. The square-profile structure is softened by the gently curved armrests and a suspended leather seat and backrest. Exposed brass details at fasteners, leg tips, and structural joints introduce a decorative yet industrial accent, serving both as reinforcement and ornamental elements.
The seat, backrest, and armrests are upholstered in naturally patinated brown saddle leather, secured with brass rivets and metal brackets. The leather shows signs of use and careful restoration, with visible creasing, mild discoloration, and edge wear, especially on the armrests. The stitching and tension in the leather indicate past repairs, which add to the piece’s historic authenticity and vintage character.
The armchair remains structurally sound and stable. The lacquer on the frame shows minor wear but no corrosion or significant damage. The brass has developed a light patina, lending warmth and texture. The leather remains supple and securely attached, consistent with its age of approximately five to six decades.
This piece exemplifies mid-century French modernism through its restrained yet luxurious materials and clear structural form. Its proportions and composition reflect a harmonious balance of function, craftsmanship, and sculptural refinement.
The chair measures 64 cm wide, 52 cm deep, and 73 cm high, with a seat height of 37 cm. In imperial units, this corresponds to approximately 25.2 inches wide, 20.5 inches deep, 28.7 inches high, and a seat height of 14.6 inches.
