Information

This rare ceiling lamp, designed by Bent Karlby and produced by Lyfa in Denmark during the 1950s, represents a refined example of Scandinavian mid-century lighting design. The lamp is composed of a large, pear-shaped opaline glass shade suspended from a central brass fixture. The shade is softly rounded, tapering slightly toward the top and curving gently at the bottom, producing a silhouette that balances functional clarity with sculptural softness. The opaline glass emits a warm, diffuse light, ideal for ambient illumination, while the metal fittings introduce a subtle contrast in material and tone.

The brass components, including the upper gallery and bottom mount ring, feature a lightly patinated surface, indicative of age and use, with minor marks and wear consistent with careful handling. The top element includes a stepped detail and a vertical rod that connects to the ceiling suspension, adding a degree of vertical articulation to the overall form. The underside is enclosed by a recessed glass diffuser held by a brass ring with evenly spaced triangular cut-outs, which subtly distribute light downward while complementing the lamp’s overall aesthetic balance.

Bent Karlby (1912–1998) was a prominent Danish lighting and furniture designer known for his refined, often understated approach to modernism. He collaborated extensively with Lyfa, one of Denmark’s leading lighting manufacturers during the post-war era. Karlby’s works are characterized by their sculptural presence, precise detailing, and ability to harmonize functionality with atmospheric effect.

Lyfa, originally established in the early 20th century, became a key innovator in Danish lighting design throughout the mid-century period. The company was noted for its collaborations with leading designers and its emphasis on quality materials and craftsmanship, producing both residential and architectural lighting that helped define Scandinavian modern interior aesthetics.

The lamp remains in good vintage condition, with small signs of usage and patina visible primarily on the brass surfaces. There are no major defects or cracks in the glass. The dimensions are 26 centimeters in diameter and 48 centimeters in height, corresponding to approximately 10.2 inches by 18.9 inches. This piece serves as both a functional lighting element and a sculptural fixture, suitable for a range of interior contexts from domestic to architectural applications.
