Kaare Klint dining chairs
This very rare set of dining chairs, known as “The Red Chair,” was designed by Kaare Klint and produced by Rud. Rasmussen cabinetmakers in Denmark in 1927. The set includes nine side chairs and two armchairs, all crafted from solid Cuban mahogany and upholstered in the original Niger leather, which has developed a rich patina over time. The leather upholstery is accented by brass rivets meticulously placed along the edges, underscoring the precision and craftsmanship inherent in the design.
The chairs feature a finely joined Cuban mahogany frame, prized for its dense grain and durability, which was a favored material in early 20th-century Danish high-quality furniture. The slightly curved backrests and balanced leg structures provide both ergonomic support and elegant form, reflecting Klint’s dedication to proportion and functionality. The armchairs are slightly larger, offering additional comfort while maintaining the design’s cohesive aesthetic.
Kaare Klint, often regarded as the father of Danish modernism, designed The Red Chair as a sophisticated reinterpretation of 18th-century English dining chairs. His approach integrated modern ergonomic considerations and refined proportions, while maintaining respect for traditional craftsmanship. Rud. Rasmussen, a prestigious Danish cabinetmaker, was responsible for producing many of Klint’s pieces, known for their meticulous workmanship and material quality.
The set remains in good vintage condition, exhibiting heavy patina and age-appropriate wear, particularly on the leather upholstery, which has softened and gained character with time. The side chairs measure 47.5 cm in width, 48 cm in depth, and 84.5 cm in height (18.7 x 18.9 x 33.3 inches), with a seat height of 43 cm (16.9 inches). The armchairs measure 60.5 cm in width, 55 cm in depth, and 89 cm in height (23.8 x 21.7 x 35 inches), with a seat height of 44 cm (17.3 inches).
This set exemplifies one of Danish furniture design’s most iconic creations, combining architectural precision, historical influence, and timeless craftsmanship.
