Hans-Agne Jakobsson table lamp
This rare table lamp, model B-204/31 Carolin, was designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB in Markaryd, Sweden, in 1963. The lamp is distinguished by its dome-shaped shade made from original leather in a warm cognac tone. The leather is meticulously stitched with a zigzag pattern, enhancing its handcrafted quality. Perforations throughout the leather allow light to diffuse softly, creating a warm and inviting glow when the lamp is illuminated. The base and stem are crafted from brass, exhibiting a polished yet naturally aged patina with signs of wear consistent with vintage use.
Hans-Agne Jakobsson was a prominent Swedish lighting designer known for his experimental use of materials and his innovative approach to creating ambient, indirect lighting. His designs often incorporated unconventional combinations of wood, fabric, and metal, contributing significantly to the Scandinavian modern movement. Jakobsson established his company in Markaryd in the 1950s, and his work remains influential in the field of mid-century lighting design.
This lamp exemplifies mid-century Scandinavian modernism, emphasizing organic materials and refined functionality. The use of leather for the lampshade is uncommon and distinctive, adding both tactile and visual warmth to the piece. The interplay between brass and leather highlights the era’s focus on material contrasts and craftsmanship.
The lamp measures 46 cm in diameter (18.1 inches) and 68 cm in height (26.8 inches). It remains in original condition, with the brass surfaces showing natural patina and age-related wear.
