Information

This table lamp, model B-140, was designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by his own firm, Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB in Markaryd, Sweden during the 1950s. The lamp is executed in polished brass and features a cylindrical silk fringe shade, a hallmark detail in Jakobsson’s body of work. The light source is enclosed within this ring of delicate, cream-colored threads, creating a warm, atmospheric glow when illuminated. The brass has developed a natural patina consistent with age, adding character without compromising the structural integrity or visual clarity of the form.

The design is composed of a circular base supporting a vertical rod that bends at a right angle to hold the socket and shade assembly. The structural elements are minimal and precisely machined, emphasizing verticality and symmetry. The lamp exhibits typical Scandinavian mid-century traits such as simplicity, functionality, and material expressiveness. Its combination of metal and textile conveys both industrial refinement and a sense of domestic softness.

Hans-Agne Jakobsson (1919–2009) was a Swedish interior and furniture designer renowned for his highly atmospheric lighting designs, which often softened light through fringe, wood, or perforated metal. He founded his company in 1951 in Markaryd, where he produced a vast array of fixtures that came to define Swedish lighting aesthetics of the mid-20th century. Jakobsson’s use of fringe in lighting was both decorative and functional, helping to diffuse light gently in living environments.

The lamp remains in good vintage condition with some signs of age-related wear to the brass surface, including mild tarnishing and light oxidation. The silk fringe is intact and clean.

The dimensions are 19 cm wide by 26.5 cm deep by 61.5 cm high, equivalent to approximately 7.5 inches wide by 10.4 inches deep by 24.2 inches high.
