Information

This exceptionally rare pair of table lamps, model B-138, was designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced during the 1950s by his own firm, Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB in Markaryd, Sweden. These lamps exemplify Jakobsson’s signature approach to lighting design, emphasizing warm, diffused light and refined material interplay.

Each lamp features a slender, polished brass stem rising from a circular base, establishing a clean, vertical profile that balances the visual complexity of the shade. The brass surfaces retain their original finish, with a subtle patina developed over time, reflecting the lamps’ vintage authenticity and adding depth to their appearance. The craftsmanship is precise, and the structural proportions are carefully calibrated to achieve visual harmony.

The shades are composed of layered silk fringes in a soft, cream color, arranged in a tiered configuration that gently tapers downward. This design element not only introduces texture and movement but also plays a central role in light diffusion. When lit, the fringes softly filter the light, casting a warm and ambient glow that is both atmospheric and functional. The cascading effect of the fringes enhances the verticality of the form while contributing to the overall sculptural presence of the lamp.

Measuring 39 cm in diameter and 61 cm in height (approximately 15.4 inches by 24 inches), the lamps possess a commanding yet elegant stature suitable for use on side tables, desks, or consoles. Each piece is labeled with its original manufacturer’s sticker, confirming authenticity and origin.

Hans-Agne Jakobsson (1919–2009) was a pivotal figure in Swedish lighting design, particularly known for his work during the mid-20th century. With a background in both architecture and carpentry, Jakobsson brought a distinct sensitivity to form and material to his designs. He frequently used natural and tactile elements—such as wood, glass, and textiles—to modulate light in a soft, ambient manner. His work, particularly from the 1950s and 60s, emphasized mood and atmosphere, setting it apart from the more austere expressions of functionalism.

Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB, based in Markaryd, was among the most innovative lighting manufacturers in Scandinavia during the postwar period. The firm produced a wide range of experimental and high-quality lighting, often in limited numbers. Model B-138, with its fringe-shaded silhouette and refined brass construction, is among the rarer and more sought-after of Jakobsson’s designs.

This pair remains in excellent vintage condition, with only minor signs of age such as light patina on the brass. Their preserved integrity, original labeling, and distinctive visual character make them important examples of Scandinavian lighting design.
