Information

This rare table lamp, model B-145, was designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by his company, Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB, in Markaryd, Sweden during the 1950s. The lamp features a cylindrical brass base with a polished surface that has developed a warm, aged patina, reflecting its vintage and careful use. Its light diffuser is made from opaline glass, which works in conjunction with the distinctive layered fringe shade composed of silk threads in a muted lavender hue. The fringe is arranged in tiers, creating a soft, textured diffusion of light that produces a warm and atmospheric glow when the lamp is illuminated.

Jakobsson’s design philosophy is evident in this piece through the thoughtful combination of high-quality materials and a theatrical approach to light diffusion. Known for his ability to shape light using fabric, wood, and metal, he often avoided harsh illumination in favor of softer, ambient lighting effects. The tactile silk fringe serves not only as a decorative feature but also as a functional element that modulates the light and enhances the lamp’s sculptural presence.

Hans-Agne Jakobsson (1919–2009) was a pivotal figure in Swedish mid-century lighting design. Beginning his career as a cabinetmaker and architect, he founded his own lighting firm in 1951. Jakobsson’s work is distinguished by innovative material use and a focus on soft, ambient light quality. His company in Markaryd was a major force in Scandinavian lighting design throughout the 1950s and 60s, with his lamps widely distributed internationally.

The B-145 lamp reflects key Scandinavian modernist values such as material honesty, warm illumination, and tactile detail, eschewing excessive ornamentation. Its balanced proportions and gentle silhouette allow it to serve effectively as both a decorative object and a practical light source.

The lamp measures 25.5 cm in height and 15 cm in diameter (approximately 10 by 5.9 inches). It is in very good condition, showing light patina and age-related wear on the brass base. The silk fringe remains intact and well-preserved with only minimal signs of use. The original manufacturer’s label is still present on the underside.
