Børge Mogensen dining chairs
This rare set of six dining chairs was designed by Børge Mogensen and produced by Søborg Møbler in Denmark during the 1950s. The design combines molded teak plywood and tubular steel, reflecting Mogensen’s early interest in industrial techniques and durable materials, while maintaining the functional clarity characteristic of Scandinavian modernism.
Each chair features a gently curved teak backrest and a slightly concave seat, both formed from molded plywood. The teak exhibits a rich, reddish-brown tone with a uniform grain pattern and subtle variations across the surfaces. The seat and backrest are mounted to a frame of bent tubular steel, which is zinc-plated and slightly patinated, showing minor wear consistent with age and use. The back support rods pass visibly through the rear of the seat and connect to the lower frame in a deliberately exposed construction typical of Mogensen’s utilitarian aesthetic. The base is composed of four slender steel legs that taper toward the floor and terminate in black plastic or rubber feet. The visual lightness of the frame contrasts with the organic warmth of the wood elements, giving the chairs a restrained, architectural presence suited to both domestic and institutional interiors.
Børge Mogensen (1914–1972) was a pivotal figure in Danish design and one of the primary architects of modern Danish furniture identity. Educated under Kaare Klint at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Mogensen emphasized functional design, straightforward construction, and accessibility.
Søborg Møbler, a manufacturer active throughout the mid-20th century, was known for producing high-quality furniture based on designs by Mogensen and other leading Danish designers, and was instrumental in introducing modern Danish furniture to broader markets. These chairs are in good original vintage condition, with even patina to the metal elements and light, honest wear to the wood surfaces, including small scratches and a warm aging of the finish.
Each chair measures 50 cm wide by 48 cm deep by 75.5 cm high (19.7 x 18.9 x 29.7 inches), with a seat height of 42 cm (16.5 inches).
