Information

This rare pair of floor lamps, attributed to Swedish designer Hans Bergström, was produced by ASEA during the 1950s. While direct authorship is not definitively confirmed, the formal clarity, materiality, and proportions align closely with Bergström’s known body of work, particularly his collaboration with ASEA before establishing Ateljé Lyktan in 1950. His design approach frequently merged refined geometry with expressive use of light and natural references, qualities seen in these pieces.

Each lamp is composed of a patinated brass stem mounted on a circular brass base. The surface of the brass exhibits visible patina and aged coloration consistent with its age, giving the lamp a warm, character-rich appearance. At the top, each lamp is fitted with a cylindrical floral-patterned shade made from original printed fabric. The delicate organic motifs resemble pressed plant silhouettes, typical of Scandinavian mid-century design’s affinity with nature. The shades are internally lined and paired with white opaline glass diffusers, which help soften and diffuse the light. The opaline inserts rest beneath the sockets and sit within the brass fixture, contributing to a more uniform and ambient illumination.

The lamps bear the ASEA mark, with model number E1747, confirming production by the Swedish electrical and lighting manufacturer ASEA. ASEA was a key player in Swedish lighting during the mid-20th century and was known for its collaborations with prominent designers such as Hans Bergström and Harald Notini.

Condition is good vintage, with patina and visible signs of use throughout the brass surface, as expected for an item of this era. The fabric shades show light age-appropriate wear but retain their structure and translucency. The printed pattern remains legible and contributes significantly to the lamps’ decorative appeal when illuminated.

These lamps are stylistically representative of mid-century Scandinavian modernism, defined by a balance between material simplicity, refined craftsmanship, and a lyrical engagement with natural motifs.

Each lamp has a diameter of 30 cm and a height of 159 cm, which corresponds to approximately 11.8 inches in diameter and 62.6 inches in height.
