Information

This is a rare and extensive set of Scandinavian conference armchairs produced by Bodafors in Sweden during the 1940s. The set consists of twelve standard-height armchairs and one higher version, all unified by construction, materials, and finish. These chairs reflect a transitional stylistic moment between pre-modern Swedish functionalism and early mid-century design principles, with a strong emphasis on craftsmanship and durability suited for formal settings.

Each chair is constructed in solid mahogany with a warm, reddish-brown tone and a visible linear grain. The frame design is defined by its gently curved back legs and rear uprights, which transition smoothly into the high backrest, giving the chairs a dignified, upright posture. The armrests are integrally shaped and meet the vertical supports with subtle carving that enhances both structure and tactility.

The chairs have been newly reupholstered in a dark grey wool fabric with a tightly woven texture, selected for both durability and visual restraint. The upholstery is applied using a traditional method with exposed brass rivets along the edges of the seat and backrest, contributing a handcrafted and slightly decorative element that complements the otherwise restrained silhouette.

The seat height is uniform across all chairs at 44 cm, but the taller version features an extended backrest, measuring 113 cm in height compared to the standard 103 cm of the others. This elevated piece likely served a specific ceremonial or presentational function within the original conference environment. All chairs are structurally sound and retain their original proportions, with the wood surfaces showing minimal signs of use consistent with careful preservation or restoration.

Bodafors, active in the early to mid-20th century, was one of Sweden’s most respected furniture manufacturers, known for producing both residential and institutional furnishings with an emphasis on material quality and joinery precision. Their work during this period reflects the values of Swedish Grace and functionalist design while beginning to transition into the cleaner forms of the mid-century idiom.

This set is representative of Scandinavian mid-century craftsmanship with a formal utility intended for public or professional interiors.

The twelve standard chairs measure 62 cm in width, 67 cm in depth, and 103 cm in height. The taller armchair measures 62 cm in width, 68 cm in depth, and 113 cm in height. All seats have a height of 44 cm. These convert approximately to:

Standard chairs: 24.4 inches wide, 26.4 inches deep, 40.6 inches high, seat height 17.3 inches

Higher chair: 24.4 inches wide, 26.8 inches deep, 44.5 inches high, seat height 17.3 inches

A matching conference table is also available, indicating the set’s original use as a cohesive ensemble for institutional or corporate representation.
